temperatures in the lower 70's. the story is the advancing storm center. these will bring moisture and potential for wind. all kinds of things are possible. there is a slight risk of severe weather already. the timing is 1:00 p.m. heavy rain is a possibility, but the wind is a bigger probability. overnight, scattered showers. the same in the morning. 3:00 tomorrow afternoon into the evening is when we will definitely be on storm watch. >> we are falling breaking news from virginia. authorities are investigating a murder-suicides that left two people dead and another with a gunshot wound. we do have a crew on the way.

check back with us for more on the developing story. police are on an active scene in the district. there is a barricade situation going on. it is at 13th and congress. it involves an overnight shooting. the neighborhood is on lockdown. sam ford is live with the latest. >> i am in congress park in southeast washington. it remains on lockdown, as it has been since early this morning. police fire, and ambulance are on the scene as the swat team looks for shooting suspects. it started around midnight with another shooting in the neighborhood. a young male victim was seriously wounded by gunfire. police determined other young males were the shooters or knew something. they would not come out. the district police called in the swat team. the neighbors have been shut down since this morning. residents complained some people

were trapped in their homes. some were outside their homes the entire day. he spoke to many. >> children have not been able to go to school. some children have not been able to get back in the house. parents returning home from work had not been able to get into the home. they are not told where they can seek shelter. >> this women -- woman with her children did not want to be identified. she said she left earlier and police would not let her back in. >> i had the common sense to get back in the house. >> police kept residents on the move from what they said could be within bullet range of the barricade situation. residents say it has been rough in recent days with gunfire every night. >> four nights straight. are you frightened? >> many are hoping peace will return to the neighborhood.

many times when police have been spirited situations, by the time they get inside, the suspects have found another way out. the swat team remains on the scene going through procedures trying to capture the suspect. reporting from southeast washington sam ford, abc 7 news. >> let's turn to the deadly attacks spreading across the globe. anger against the united states continues to grow about the film the muslims say mocks the prophet mohammed. two marines were killed in afghanistan. six fighter jets were destroyed. there were riots at the u.s. embassy in jakarta indonesia. we will take a look at the wave of violence at 6:00. >> a local veteran is back on trial for the murder of his roommates, also an iraqi veteran.

brad is live with what happened. >> closing arguments are an opportunity for lawyers to sum up the story they believe the evidence tells for the jury. today, they have gone more than six hours, almost unheard of. then again they seem to not be in a rush. it has taken six years to get to this point. it started in september of 2006 in a gaithersburg apartment shared by two former army rangers just home from war. a gunshot rang out. 22-year-old michael mcclain -- mcqueen was dead, shot in the head. his roommate told police an intruder did it. then he changed his story and said it was suicide. smith told police in a panic he threw the gun in a lake. in large part because of the changing story smith was charged with murder. >> by brother's life was taken.

no verdict, nothing can change that ever. >> that was mcqueen's brother speaking in 2008 when smith was convicted on murder. that conviction was overturned on a technicality. the retrial has taken three weeks. closing arguments lasted more than six hours as prosecutors again displayed gruesome death scene pictures and talk about how the blood spatter proves gary smith killed mcqueen. smith's attorneys say it proves suicide. no matter the outcome, it will not bring like that. >> he was funny and smart. he was planning to go to college. >> moments ago, the lawyers were still talking, the final phase of closing arguments as the prosecution begins its rebuttal argument. the jury is expected to get the

case very soon. brad bell, abc 7 news. >> a d.c. man is behind bars charged with felony animal cruelty. in may, a humane society officers examined kittens that could not walk and had infections. the kittens had to be unionized. he is facing up to five years in prison. a tow truck worker has been hospitalized after being trapped under a tractor-trailer. it happened at 10:00 this morning in northwest washington. crews were able to free him. a firefighter suffered minor injuries during the rescue. >> we have got to address the elephant in the room. a heartbreaking loss to the st. louis rams. >> what is even worse is we're

weather heading our way. >> it is tentative. it is starting to develop. the timing will bring possibly damaging wind to a large part of the viewing area after 3:00 tomorrow. at the moment, quiet. this is how the picture changed today. the clouds started rolling in. the skies look like this now mostly cloudy. the high of 76. the wind is out of the south. that is a key as to what is coming up. like showers in southwest virginia kentucky, west virginia. this is a light shower activity overnight into tomorrow morning. this pressure will move up through louisiana. it will combine with a cold front coming across the michigan. they will bring up accelerated

moisture and strong wind. it will be windy tomorrow. it will be warm and humid. we will get near 80 degrees. wendy's two come together, there is -- when the two come together, there is the potential for severe weather. a couple of severe a tornado warnings in tennessee. that is in advance of the system moving through over the next 36 hours. the satellite shows clouds advancing steadily. there is the rain showing up on the radar. everything is concentrated to the south. this is one of these situations where the storm will have an effect on our area with plenty of rain. coming up along the appalachians makes it more tropical. there will be a push out of the gulf of mexico. the potential is there for a lot of rain. overnight, heavier rain to the west.

tomorrow morning, light showers. when we get the convergence of the storm center and front that will bring the most rain and strong wind. it could cause wind damage in some areas. that will be chased away by high pressure ona wednesday pressuree. an act of weather day from new york city to florida. hundreds of miles under the risk of severe weather tomorrow. this is how dynamic the system will be. obviously, heavy rain. the wind will be the biggest concern. 3:00 until 10:00 is when we will be most likely to see it. the next seven days, things calm down quickly on wednesday. thursday and friday look nice. over the weekend, we will see the chance of showers. we will climb to the upper 70's.

>> we have more on the breaking news where police are on the scene on a triple shooting. >> tom is live with the latest details. >> the scene is several houses down that way. law enforcement is still there. here is video our helicopter took not long after it happened. the son 43-years old, shot and killed his mother and 51-year- old sister. then he shot and killed himself. the sister is still alive according to the sheriff's office. she is in surgery right now. they are hoping she will make it. they say they want to talk to

her about the motive and why the son did this. they say they are not sure why. neighbors do not know the family well but had heard rumors the son was strange. no one can figure out why he would have shot and killed his mother and tried to kill his sister. police have recovered a handgun and rifle. this little neighborhood is a very safe area. they hardly ever have trouble here. just on the other side of the woods is a famous battlefield where stonewall jackson was shot and mortally wounded. the national park service runs everything within about 30 feet of me. this little neighborhood of private property is where the shootings happened earlier today. >> keep us posted. >> let's look at our other top

stories. police are on the scene of the barricade situation that has locked down in d.c. neighborhood. a young man was seriously wounded in an overnight shooting. police believe the suspects are located in an apartment unit. they called in the swat team. >> pandamonium has taken hold of the national zoo. she is officially a mother after five years of trying. we have not seen the baby but we have heard him or her. >> it has been a crowd of star to the school year. >> students are coming from outside the county to go to the high school. school officials are ready to take action. there are consequences families may now face. >> they are calling this residency fraud. they have put the parents on notice. you have until wednesday to do

the right thing no questions asked or your child could be out of the school and you could be out a bundle of money. >> northpoint is charles county's newest high-school but also the most crowded. it was built to accommodate 1900 students maximum. this year, it has more than 2200. >> the hallways are crowded. the cafeteria is crowded. the bathrooms are crowded. we have portable classrooms outside. >> it turns out in the past administrators have found some students live away outside the school district. w>> some kids are so far away as prince george's county and virginia. >> now the school board is cracking down. beginning wednesday, they will be checking public records asking for extra proof of residency, and making home visits. >> they should crack down. it is not fair to the people

the plan to offer wireless coverage has been delayed. metro says the agency will not be able to finish the work until 2015. that will require a shutdown of major portions of the track to make the upgrades. >> we know how bad the traffic is here. with all of that traffic comes the noise. >> a new study from the centers for disease control takes a closer look at the impact city noise can have on your sleep and health. >> by honking, the starting and

stopping in the air or on the street, it is hard to escape the city noise around here. >> traffic ambulance police cars. >> it is always there. you cannot shut it out. >> a new study looks at noise pollution and how much it annoys people and makes them up at night. researchers focused on atlanta finding 9.5% of the population bothered by high noise levels. 2% were losing sleep over. the census found traffic noise is worse and many serious -- areas, including d.c. the problem could be more severe here. >> fire engines waking up all night and day. >> this doctor is the director for the center for sleep and wake disorders. >> the sleep tends to not be restored.

>> she says not getting enough of restored of sleep can lead to being tired and irritable and serious health problems over time. >> they have a higher risk of hypertension and heart disease. these are major killers. >> she says some people are better at filtering out noise and sleeping through the night. >> it is the bustle, movement, being alive, and in the city. >> for those struggling with it, retirement could not come soon enough. >> when i retire, i am going home to louisiana where it is quiet and slow. >> researchers say enough's sleep is as important as eating right and exercise. more studies are needed to know just how much noise pollution is affecting us. >> we have concerns from medical experts about how much salt kids are eating. the centers for disease control says children are consuming as much as adults.

we have active weather on the horizon for tomorrow. rain showers across virginia. we will see some of that approach and overnight. light showers. it is the area ahead of the storm center moving to mississippi that will team up with the cold front to provide storm activity. the heaviest rain will states toward the appalachians. our biggest threat will be the wind. isolated tornadoes possible. a severe thunderstorm risk up and down the coast tomorrow. a wide area under the gun. we see the timing and precipitation increasing throughout the day. it is not out of the question there could be an isolated tornado with the system before it clears out and turns cooler wednesday. i think we will be in fine shape later in the week. the worst weather will be from
